People uprooted from Bridgeport (1)
Bridgeport, in Richmond, was named for the bridges connecting Lulu and Sea Islands to the mainland. By 1914, the area contained several mills (flour mill, shingle mill, iron bar mill, saw mill) and the Dominion Safe Works.
The Bridgeport School was built in 1908 and acted as a combined elementary and secondary school from 1910 to 1927. It reverted only to elementary classes after the graduating class of 1928. In the late 1930s, Japanese Canadian children who lived at the Sea Island canneries started attending the school, travelling by bus with other local farm kids.
