Japanese Canadian Legacies Society

The Japanese Canadian Legacies Society (JCLS) was created in 2022 to deliver on priorities established by the Japanese Canadian community with a framework written under BC Redress.

JCLS’s mandate comes from community consultations held across Canada in 2019 and 2020, which set out a framework for what a full accounting by British Columbia would require. In May 2022, the Province committed to funding those pillars—Education, Seniors’ Health and Wellness, Community Fund, Heritage Preservation and the Monument.

JCLS funding supports Japanese Canadian Survivors and their Descendants, and strengthens our community’s organizations and infrastructure. Through the interconnected work of intergenerational healing and learning, historical recognition, and community renewal, the work of JCLS will leave a lasting legacy for Japanese Canadians, for British Columbians, and for all Canadians.
