People uprooted from Coombs (89) View on map

Coombs was established by non-Indigenous settlers in the late 1800s. In 1910, a Salvation Army emigration plan developed Coombs into a community. A general store was built in 1911. By 1937, the Cameron Lake Logging Company, co-founded by Sasaki Shuichi, was responsible for logging and sawmill operations in the area, primarily in Cathedral Grove.

The company employed many Japanese Canadians and had company housing for the families. Japanese Canadians also worked for other nearby mills including the BC Pulp and Paper Company (Woodfibre), McBain Lumber Company (Port Alberni), Capilano Logging Company (Hatzic), and Mayo Lumber Company (Paldi).

This person will be included on the monument panels in a future addition.
