People uprooted from Cranbrook (13) View on map

Cranbrook, originally a Ktunaxa settlement, was established by non-Indigenous settlers in 1885. A townsite was developed in 1897, and in 1898, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) built the Crowsnest line through the town. Cranbrook was incorporated in 1905 and several mills opened within the town’s first decade.

There are records of at least one Japanese Canadian child attending the Kootenay Orchards School in the mid-1920s. A Fujita family lived in Cranbrook prior to 1916, before moving to Fort Macleod. The Futa family ran a flour, feed, and grocery business in Cranbrook for forty-five years before being forcibly uprooted.

This person will be included on the monument panels in a future addition.
