People uprooted from Crofton (3) View on map

Crofton, originally part of the District of North Cowichan (1873), was established by Henry Croft as a copper smelting town in 1902, processing copper ore from his mine at Mt. Sicker. The smelter closed in 1908 when copper prices fell, and Crofton relied on small logging and mill operations in the surrounding area. Many Japanese Canadians relocated to nearby areas such as Salt Spring Island when the town went into decline, but at least one family, the Takarabes, was left at the time of uprooting.

This person will be included on the monument panels in a future addition.
