People uprooted from Ladner (33)
Ladner, a neighbourhood in Delta, was pre-empted by non-Indigenous settlers William and Thomas Ladner in 1868, and was initially called Ladner’s Landing. The brothers built dykes in the area to shield the low-lying land from floods, and developed large farming and fishing operations. A wharf was built in 1873, and farmers would load produce and livestock onto steamboats for markets on Vancouver Island, New Westminster, and Vancouver. Ladner became part of the municipality of Delta in 1879.
Japanese Canadians in Ladner were often fishermen and worked for local canneries including the Brunswick Cannery #2 at Canoe Pass and the Currie-McWilliams Cannery on Westham Island. Both were built in 1897 and purchased by BC Packers in 1902. The Currie-McWilliams cannery burned down in 1920, and by 1930 both became fish camps for Steveston’s Imperial Plant (Imperial Cannery).
