People uprooted from Queen Charlotte City (5) View on map

Queen Charlotte City (Daajing Giids), on Graham Island near Skidegate Landing, was founded by non-Indigenous settlers in 1891. The North American Timber Holding Company built a sawmill in 1908, operating intermittently until 1926; the townsite was registered around the same time. By 1910, the community had a hospital, school, stores, hotels, and other services.

The Katsura family arrived in 1909, and much of the mill workforce was Japanese Canadian. In 1912, the city became the region’s unofficial capital. In the 1920s and 1930s, two salteries operated, including one owned by the Kobayashi family. The mill was bought by A.P. Allsion Logging in 1926 and operated in Queen Charlotte City until 1933, with workers living in mobile floating camps. The company relocated to Cumshewa Inlet.
