People uprooted from Rosedale (5) View on map

Rosedale, in the Fraser Valley, was established as an agricultural community by non-Indigenous settlers in 1874. Population growth followed the completion of the Yale–New Westminster Wagon Road, and by the 1890s the community had a school, post office, and store. Rosedale became part of the City of Chilliwack in 1980.

Ai Tommy Adachi and his family moved from Sardis to Rosedale in 1924 and operated a dairy farm at 10065 McGrath Road, south of the elementary school. Tommy was also a veterinarian and assisted neighbouring farmers with sick cattle and difficult births. The family also maintained apple orchards. Their eldest daughter, Aya, worked as a dressmaker before moving to Vancouver in 1938. Their cousin, Shingo, lived with them briefly. The Adachis were close friends of the Kosumi family in Sardis. When the family was forcibly uprooted, much of the community gathered at the train station to bid them farewell.
