People uprooted from Saanichton (1) View on map

Saanichton (Saanichton Village), in Central Saanich and on the traditional territories of the WSÁNEĆ Peoples, was established by non-Indigenous settlers as a travel hub in the late nineteenth century. The village served as a commercial centre to the robust surrounding farming and agricultural community. A school was built in 1873, and by the late 1890s several businesses had developed around the Victoria and Sidney Railway (V&S) station, constructed in 1894. The railway operated until 1919. Many Japanese Canadian farm labourers in the area may have listed their addresses as Victoria.
