People uprooted from Sandwick (5) View on map

Sandwick, near Courtenay, was established as a non-Indigenous agricultural community in the 1880s. Japanese Canadians in Sandwick were primarily farmers, although logging and coal mining were prominent industries in the area. The local post office operated from 1889 to 1948 and a school was constructed in 1913. The Sandwick Cairn that commemorates soldiers in the First World War marks the historic location of this community, now part of Courtenay.
