People uprooted from Sardis (6)
Sardis, in the Fraser Valley, was established as an agricultural community by non-Indigenous settlers in 1866. In 1885, Edenbank farm became the site of BC’s first creamery and cheese factory and the province’s first dairy co-operative. Hops farming began in the Fraser Valley in the 1890s. The John I. Haas hop farm opened in 1925 and employed several Japanese Canadians from the Fraser Valley and surrounding area. Sardis became part of the City of Chilliwack in 1980.
Mr. And Mrs. Ikeda lived in Sardis until returning to Japan in 1930, and records also note the brief residence of Mr. and Mrs. Teshima. Shin and Yori Kosumi moved from Mayne Island to Sardis in 1924. Shin worked as a high rigger at the Orion Bowman Sawmill. The Kosumis were close friends of the Adachi family in Rosedale. A street in Chilliwack now commemorates the Kosumi family.
