People uprooted from Service (1) View on map

Service is not a historically recorded or present-day community in BC. Tsunejiro Hiraiʼs custodian case file is the only one that mentions Service as a former address. It is possibly a misspelling of Sardis. A small hops farm in Sardis employed several Japanese Canadians, and Hirai is identified as a farmer and labourer in his case file. His file number is also close to those of others uprooted from Sardis. Alternatively, Service may refer to a temporary postal destination. Hirai was forcibly uprooted to Tashme—the former 14 Mile Ranch livestock and dairy operation. While possible, it is unlikely that he worked there before 1942.
