People uprooted from Simoom Sound (24)
Simoom Sound was the site of a float logging camp in the early twentieth century. The Simoom Sound post office opened in the logging camp’s general store in 1912. In 1936, it was relocated to the west side of Gilford Island. Sullivan & Hiland Logging Company (Hiland), the primary employer in the area, started operations during this period. Japanese Canadians lived in bunkhouses and family homes on these floats and women often worked in camp facilities.
