People uprooted from Twigg Island (1) View on map

Twigg Island, between Vancouver and Richmond, was originally known as Mason’s Island and Bell’s Island. John Twigg owned the island from 1889 until 1926. In the early twentieth century, the Twigg, Mitchell, and Eburne Islands were joined using sand from the shipping channels. By 1951, Twigg Island was considered part of Mitchell Island.

Before being forcibly uprooted, the Abe family farmed land on Mitchell Island. Shizuko Abe farmed on the Twigg Island portion, while her parents and siblings farmed on the Eburne portion.

This person will be included on the monument panels in a future addition.
