Capilano, part of the District of North Vancouver, was established along the Capilano Road, built in the 1880s. Around that time, the area was mostly uninhabited, but the road evolved from a horse trail into a tourist route for the Capilano Suspension Bridge, built in 1889. After the construction of the Lions Gate Bridge in 1938, Capilano Road became a major route for travellers. Capilano is divided into two communities: Upper and Lower Capilano.
Japanese Canadians living in Capilano were often fishermen and loggers. Some worked in other parts of the Greater Vancouver area or travelled seasonally for work.
