Matsqui, on the traditional territory of the Matsqui Nation of the Stó:lō Peoples and part of the District of Matsqui, was established as farmland in the 1860s. Scandinavian settlers began arriving in 1899, developing an agricultural economy based on dairy and poultry farming, as well as berry and vegetable production. A village was formed, with a post office opening in 1902 and a garage, pharmacy, and library building constructed in 1925. Mennonite settlers arrived in the late 1920s, primarily in Clearbrook, which became Matsqui’s commercial center. In 1995, Matsqui merged with the District Municipality of Abbotsford to form the city of Abbotsford.
Japanese Canadians transformed the low-lying land that was often submerged for much of the year into productive farmland by constructing drainage ditches and applying large quantities of fertilizer. Developing these farms often required up to a decade of continuous labour. Most Japanese Canadian families in Matsqui earned their livelihoods through agriculture.
