North Galiano Island was the primary settlement area for Japanese Canadians on Galiano Island, including a settlement at Alcala Point. Early settlement in the area was sparsely recorded, but a Scot owned and opperated the first store in North Galiano for some time before 1905 when it was sold and closed.
Most Japanese Canadian men living in the area were fishermen or cannery workers employed by Moresby Island Fisheries, Cowichan Saltery Limited, and Canadian Saltery Company Limited; several fishermen were self-employed. I. Sugiyama was the president of Canadian Saltery, and S. Fukuyama was the director.
Galianoʼs North End Hall was formerly a school where, before 1942, most students were Japanese Canadian. With a majority of the community being forcibly uprooted, the salteries went out of business.
